How To Apply For Nebraska SNAP Benefits

View the information below if you are interested in applying for a EBT card in Nebraska. It is important that you have all the documentation and information needed so the application process is not delayed. If you still have questions or issues about applying for food stamps, known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), then you can call the Nebraska SNAP hotline at 800-383-4278. The department that handles this program is called the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

The federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program helps low-income people buy food. It's not necessary to be receiving other public assistance in order to be eligible, but people don't receive SNAP benefits automatically, they must apply and be found eligible.

Households that meet the program guidelines for income and resources receive SNAP benefits for free. A household can be one person or a group of people who purchase and prepare meals together. If groups live in the same house, but buy food separately, the groups may qualify as separate households.

Nebraska SNAP benefits can only be used to buy food. Alcoholic beverages, pet food, tobacco, paper products, or other nonfood items can't be purchased with SNAP benefits. The benefit amount is placed in an electronic account which can be accessed with an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. The EBT cards are accepted by most supermarkets and grocery stores. Some "Meals on Wheels" services may accept them, and recipients over age 60 and their spouses may be able to use them to pay for congregate meals.
